Samsung May Add a Second Wide Foldable as Galaxy Z Fold8 Demand Grows

Source: Date:

Samsung’s first wide-style foldable appears to have performed well enough to encourage a broader product strategy. According to a new report from Korea, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is selling better than Samsung anticipated, and the company may respond by adding a second wide foldable to next year’s lineup.

The information comes from a tipster citing display-supplier sources. Because demand for the wide Fold8 has reportedly exceeded expectations, Samsung is said to be planning an additional model alongside the regular successor in the Fold series.

Samsung has allegedly not settled on the exact formula for the new model. Two options are said to be under evaluation: a version with a larger display than the Fold8, and a version with the same display size but lower specifications. Only one of the two projects is expected to reach the market, and the final decision is reportedly approaching.

The tentative names mentioned for the two prototypes are Galaxy Z Fold9+ for the larger device and Galaxy Z Fold9 FE for the more affordable, reduced-spec version.

Samsung has not disclosed individual sales numbers for the wide Fold8. However, the company previously stated that the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra combined sold 45% more in Europe during their first nine weeks than the Galaxy Z Fold7 did during the equivalent launch period last year. With the iPhone Duo now available, Samsung may want to widen its foldable portfolio to defend its position and address more customer segments.

As a reminder, the Galaxy Z Fold8 features a 7.6-inch 2448x1848 inner display in a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 5.5-inch 1248x1972 cover display. Both screens are LTPO AMOLED panels with 120Hz refresh rates. The phone is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, a 50MP main camera with OIS, a 50MP ultrawide camera, and a 4,800mAh battery with 45W wired and 20W wireless charging support.
