Sony Unveils LYTIA 720 50MP 1/1.56-inch Mobile Camera Sensor

Sony has introduced the LYTIA 720, its newest 50MP stacked CMOS image sensor built for mobile devices. Designed to improve everyday smartphone photography, the sensor pairs a 1/1.56-inch format with 1.0μm pixels and Sony’s Ultra High Conversion Gain (UHCG) circuit technology for stronger low-light capture and reduced noise.

Sony claims the LYTIA 720 can lower random noise by as much as 50% compared with the LYTIA 700, helping produce cleaner images in dim environments. By combining UHCG with Hybrid Frame-HDR (HF-HDR), the sensor is capable of achieving up to 100dB of dynamic range.

The new sensor also supports 4K 60fps HDR video recording using single-frame HDR technology. According to Sony, this should help preserve detail in shadows, limit blown highlights in high-contrast scenes, and create images that look closer to what the human eye perceives.

Sony says mass-production shipments of the LYTIA 720 are expected to begin early next month.
