Sony introduces LYTIA 720 50MP 1/1.56-inch stacked sensor for smartphones

Sony has expanded its mobile imaging lineup with the LYTIA 720, a new 50MP stacked CMOS sensor built for smartphones. Designed to improve everyday photography and video capture, the sensor pairs a compact 1/1.56-inch format with features aimed at cleaner low-light shots and more balanced high-contrast scenes.

The LYTIA 720 uses 1.0μm pixels and incorporates Sony’s Ultra High Conversion Gain (UHCG) circuit technology. Sony claims this helps cut random noise by as much as 50% compared with the LYTIA 700, which should result in clearer images with less grain in challenging lighting.

By combining UHCG with Hybrid Frame-HDR (HF-HDR), the new sensor delivers up to 100dB of dynamic range. It also supports 4K 60 fps HDR video recording through single-frame HDR technology, making it a strong option for creators who want smoother, more natural-looking video with reduced motion artifacts.

Sony says the LYTIA 720 is engineered to preserve shadow detail while limiting overexposed highlights, helping photos and videos look closer to what the human eye sees. Mass-production shipments are scheduled to begin early next month.
