iPhone Duo launch meets foldable deal wave as Galaxy Z Fold8, Razr Fold and other offers stack up

Source: Date:

Apple's first foldable has officially begun reaching customers, and it lands in a market already crowded with discounted rivals. The iPhone Duo launch comes with limited retail stock and long online wait times, while Samsung and Motorola are pushing foldable deals that make the $2,000 Apple device face some serious pressure.

The iPhone Duo is now shipping, but Apple has cautioned that in-store inventory will be limited and online orders may face lengthy delays. Apple is working to increase production, though it will take time for supply to catch up with demand.

Apple's foldable starts at $2,000 for the base 256GB version and reaches $3,200 for the 2TB model. Buyers who want a more conventional iPhone can still save money: the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max is $700 cheaper, while the more compact iPhone 18 Pro starts $100 below that.

Samsung's foldable competition

In the U.S., the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is the closest direct competitor to Apple's wide-style foldable. With a $200 discount and a lower starting price, it comes in about $300 below the iPhone Duo. It is also thinner at 9.7mm versus 11.3mm and much lighter at 201g versus 254g, while offering a 5.5-inch cover display versus 5.4 inches and a comparable 7.6-inch inner screen.

Battery capacity is nearly identical too, at 4,800mAh versus 4,883mAh, leaving efficiency to decide endurance: the Galaxy uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while the iPhone Duo uses Apple's A20 Pro. Neither device includes a dedicated telephoto camera, with Samsung offering dual 50MP cameras and Apple offering dual 48MP modules.

Samsung also offers a larger book-style option in the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. It adds a 6.5-inch cover display with a tall 21:9 aspect ratio and an 8.0-inch inner display, yet still stays thin and light at 8.9mm and 215g. That makes it 39g lighter than the iPhone Duo. Camera hardware is stronger here, with a 200MP 1/1.3-inch main sensor and a 10MP 3x/69mm telephoto lens.

Last year's Galaxy Z Fold7 remains a strong value pick. It is listed at $1,350 on Amazon, while Walmart offers it for $1,300. Although the naming can be confusing, the true follow-up to the Z Fold7 is the Z Fold8 Ultra rather than the standard Z Fold8, thanks to meaningful upgrades in display quality, battery performance, charging and overall speed.

Motorola and flip-style deals

Google's foldable still lacks a compelling discount, making the Motorola Razr Fold a more interesting alternative. It is not the thinnest or lightest option at 10.1mm and 243g, but it brings a large 6,000mAh battery with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging. That is a notable step up from the 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired and 20W wireless charging on the Z Fold8 Ultra. It runs on the non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, promises seven OS updates and includes a 50MP main camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor, a 50MP 3x/71mm telephoto and a 50MP ultra-wide camera.

For flip-phone fans, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 is still available for $1,050, though we have seen it dip below $1,000 and consider that a better deal.

Meanwhile, last year's Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 is back down to $700. It still has some drawbacks, including the older Snapdragon 8 Elite, but it undercuts the Z Flip8 while offering more RAM, more storage, a bigger battery and faster charging.

Tablet, Mac and Apple TV offers

Samsung.com is offering $100 off the new Galaxy Tab S12+ and Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra with code PYPL100. Both tablets use 120Hz OLED displays, support DeX and run on last year's Dimensity 9500 chipset. The Tab S12+ has a 12.6-inch screen and a 10,600mAh battery, while the Tab S12 Ultra moves to 14.6 inches and 11,600mAh.

The new MacBook Air 13-inch is another interesting cross-shopping option. Some buyers may wonder why choose the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra when a MacBook is similarly priced, and Apple's laptop is actually cheaper unless Samsung trade-in savings are applied. The M5-powered MacBook Air launched at $1,100 for the base 16GB/512GB model before a price increase added $200.

For a desktop setup, the latest Apple Mac mini with the M6 chip cuts costs by skipping the display, battery and keyboard. It also adds more connectivity than the MacBook Air, with three Thunderbolt 4 ports instead of two, full-size HDMI and 2.5Gb Ethernet.

Apple has also refreshed the Apple TV 4K. The fourth-generation model costs roughly double what the third-generation device cost at launch, though the older model has also been affected by price increases. It features the A19 chipset with a GPU twice as fast as the A15 in the previous model, plus 128GB storage and gigabit Ethernet as standard, with availability on November 13.
