Audi Launches Production of the New A2 e-tron Model
In a remarkable move towards electric mobility, Audi has commenced production of its highly anticipated A2 e-tron model mere days after its official unveiling. The production takes place at the Ingolstadt plant in Germany, with the first units coming off the assembly line in the presence of Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder.
Audi has significantly accelerated the development timeline for the A2 e-tron, shortening it by 21 months compared to previous vehicle projects. This achievement has been made possible through a strategy that emphasizes fewer parts and efforts to streamline complexity, spatial requirements, and logistics.
In a first for Audi, the company has implemented the "strings-of-pearls" production principle at its Ingolstadt plant. This method allows the order of customer demands to be decided just six days before assembly begins, drastically reducing complexity. By establishing a fixed sequence, suppliers can produce and package components in the correct order, enhancing cost efficiency and minimizing the need for storage and sorting areas.
The flexible layout of the facilities enables the simultaneous production of the A2's body alongside the A3. The use of fully automated robotic stations to install wheels illustrates Audi's commitment to innovation. Furthermore, advanced robots can retrieve small sheet-metal parts from unorganized containers and integrate them into the production line seamlessly.
Audi is also leveraging artificial intelligence across its production sites, utilizing various AI-supported knowledge assistants. These include a Supply Chain chatbot designed to aid employees in finding essential knowledge and documentation, and a maintenance chat to assist teams with troubleshooting and solutions.
The new A2 production line exemplifies Audi's transformation, showcasing a more automated and less complex manufacturing process. Nonetheless, the company emphasizes that human effort remains vital to its success, with modern technologies facilitating targeted support for workers in their roles.
