Nissan is making a strategic comeback with the reintroduction of the Pixo, an affordable EV aimed at navigating the complexities of the modern electric vehicle market. Once a symbol of budget-friendly motoring back in 2009, the Pixo now aims to capture the attention of drivers faced with skyrocketing car prices and an influx of competitively-priced electric models from emerging markets. With this revival, Nissan hopes to reaffirm its position in the ever-evolving automotive landscape.

Back in 2009, if you had €7,030 in your pocket, you could step into any Nissan showroom in the UK and drive away with a new car. That amount would have bought you a Suzuki Alto—rebadged as a Nissan—which featured minimalistic design, manual windows, and basic features. It wasn't glamorous, but for many cash-strapped motorists, it offered practicality above all.

Now, almost two decades later, as car prices have surged and the market is increasingly dominated by luxurious electric vehicles weighing close to two-and-a-half tons, Nissan is revamping the Pixo to address a new set of challenges.

Despite launching the game-changing Leaf in 2010—a model credited with launching the mass-market electric car revolution—Nissan has seen its early advantage dwindle amid boardroom chaos, lackluster updates, and a stubborn adherence to legacy charging systems.

Today, Nissan confronts an aggressive wave of budget-friendly Chinese hatchbacks, leading to the unfortunate decision to halt the development of an all-electric Qashqai. With the inability to tailor a unique C-segment crossover independently, the company turned towards collaboration for survival.

Thanks to its alliance with Renault, Nissan is set to release a version of the Renault Twingo E-Tech, rather than developing a new model from scratch—an economically wise move in today's automotive climate. The new Pixo will share its underpinnings and production line with the Twingo in Novo Mesto.

This strategic partnership mirrors the development of the new Micra, which reskinned the retro-modern Renault 5 into a Nissan, demonstrating that collaboration is essential for facing the daunting scale of competition from companies in Shenzhen.

Design-wise, early camouflage-clad prototypes hint at a playful take on the Twingo’s upright silhouette, but with Nissan's unique aesthetic, including circular daytime running lights reminiscent of the new Micra. Insiders reveal that the design also draws inspiration from Nissan's classic "Pike" cars from the late 1980s, valuing distinct personality over generic shapes.

Dimensionally, the Pixo is expected to be nearly identical to the Twingo, registering an overall length of approximately 3,789 mm, a width of 1,720 mm, and a height of 1,491 mm. It rides on a robust 2,493 mm wheelbase, aligning closely with urban driving needs.

The Pixo will face competition from products like the Stellantis-distributed Leapmotor T03, which provides distinct advantages in terms of size but struggles with stability due to its design. The Pixo and Twingo are anticipated to weigh in around 1,200 kg—a testament to their structural robustness and superior ride dynamics.

Powering the Pixo will be a straightforward electric setup—a single front-mounted motor producing 60 kW (approximately 80-82 hp) and 175 Nm of torque. While this may not be racing-level power, it is perfectly adequate for urban maneuvering and swift actions in traffic.

The vehicle will be outfitted with a compact 27.5 kWh LFP battery pack, promising a WLTP range of up to 262 km. This keeps in mind the realistic driving needs of city dwellers, providing ample range for everyday tasks while avoiding the unnecessary burden of larger batteries for short trips.

Charging capabilities will also be sensible, with a maximum output of 50 kW on DC fast chargers. This will allow users to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes, with home charging available via standard equipment in around four hours, or quicker with an optional upgraded charger.

Nissan aims for a starting price under €20,000 before grants or tax rebates when the Pixo is launched. This positions it competitively against vehicles like the Leapmotor T03, which starts around €18,900, and sets the stage for competition with the BYD Dolphin Surf.

As electric vehicle prices have increasingly become barriers to entry for families, the sub-twenty-thousand Euro mark is vital for car manufacturers looking to capture the European market.

Nissan's pivot reflects not just a retreat but a strategic maneuver for survival. By collaborating with Renault on the AmpR Small architecture, Nissan reduces its developmental financial burden, ensuring sufficient product availability, while supporting dealer networks with an approachable electric option for consumers.
