BMW has launched the iX5 Long Wheelbase (LWB), a luxury electric SUV made exclusively for the Chinese market. This newly debuted model is designed to meet the preferences of local buyers, emphasizing enhanced comfort and sophistication for rear-seat passengers — a feature that resonates with the growing trend of chauffeur-driven vehicles in China.
The iX5 LWB features a wheelbase that is 130mm longer compared to the standard version, totaling 3,165mm. This additional length is specifically aimed at providing increased legroom for a more luxurious experience on the road.
Unlike the global iX5 unveiled earlier, the Long Wheelbase variant does not offer new powertrain or battery innovations. Instead, it utilizes existing technology while incorporating localized digital features and customized connected services tailored for the Chinese consumer. Production will take place in China to cater specifically to the domestic market.
Under the hood, the iX5 adopts BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology with an 800V architecture, boasting a claimed range of over 620 miles (CLTC) supported by a substantial 141 kWh battery pack. Furthermore, it is equipped with BMW's cutting-edge "Heart of Joy" central computing platform and a unique "Address-to-Address" assisted driving system, developed collaboratively with Momenta, specifically tailored for Chinese drivers.
The BMW iX5 Long Wheelbase is set to become available in China in 2027, emphasizing BMW's commitment to innovation and luxury in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
