Samsung has taken a significant step into augmented reality with the announcement of its latest innovation: AI smart glasses powered by Android XR. Unveiled at their recent Unpacked event, these glasses promise to enhance user experience while prioritizing privacy.
The standout feature of these smart glasses is their built-in privacy mechanism, specifically designed to address concerns about photographic and video recording. Whenever the camera is in use—whether for taking pictures, recording videos, or participating in video calls via platforms like Google Meet—an LED indicator will glow alerting not just the wearer, but also those around them.
This approach ensures transparency by clearly signaling when recording is taking place. An additional layer of security is provided as the glasses are engineered to detect any attempts to obstruct the LED indicator; if covered, the camera will automatically disable itself. This feature follows in the footsteps of similar enhancements made by Meta in their own smart glasses.
While it remains to be seen if this privacy feature will reassure users about the presence of smart glasses in everyday environments, it does represent a meaningful effort by Samsung to mitigate concerns over potential misuse.
