Google Play Store to Introduce Third-Party App Stores in the US

Source: Date:

Operating an app store is a lucrative venture that platform providers are intent on safeguarding. Historically, this was also true for Google, but the recent conclusion of a six-year legal dispute with Epic Games has led to a surprising outcome that will enhance access to third-party app stores.

The saga began in 2020 when Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming that the tech giant monopolized the Android app distribution market and in-app billing services. Although a jury ruled in favor of Epic, the case underwent an appeals process, culminating in a settlement agreement between the two companies in 2025.

As per the terms of the settlement, Android would be opened up to the installation of third-party app stores, contingent on approval from Google through its “Registered App Stores” program. Additionally, these third-party app stores had to be sideloaded by users.

Starting next week, third-party app stores will be available through the Google Play Store in the US

However, recent reports from The Verge indicate that Google and Epic have disregarded this settlement, and starting next week (July 22), third-party app stores will be directly installable from the Google Play Store for users in the United States.

There will still be a process for a third-party app store to gain acceptance into the Google Play Store (more details here). This shift is significant as many users prefer not to sideload apps, marking a major victory for Epic Games, and it is likely that other prominent publishers will follow suit.

The Process of Installing a Registered App Store

It should be noted that this development pertains specifically to the US market. Globally, Google continues to advance its Registered App Stores initiative, which is encouraging as the company has committed to lowering its service fees—reducing in-app purchase fees to 20% and recurring subscription fees to 10%.

Moreover, app developers will now have the freedom to use third-party billing for their applications and games. However, those opting for Google Play’s billing system will benefit from reduced fees compared to the previous structure. Developers in the European Economic Area, the UK, and the US will face fees of 5%. Additional details are available here. It is important to note that these changes are already being implemented in certain regions, with a global deadline set for the end of September 2027.
