Experimenting with the Oppo Find X9 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra: A Dual Experience in Mobile Photography and Editing

Introduction

In the ever-evolving world of mobile photography, the combination of advanced camera hardware and powerful editing capabilities is crucial for capturing and enhancing stunning images on-the-go. As a long-time user of the Oppo Find X7 Ultra, I was excited to explore its successor, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra, in tandem with the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra for editing. This article summarizes my experience of utilizing these two flagship devices for mobile photography and post-processing, noting the strengths and shortcomings of each.

Combining Forces

After using the Oppo Find X7 Ultra for two years, the anticipation for the Oppo Find X9 Ultra grew as I recently had the opportunity to test its camera; my primary area of interest. To enhance my workflow, I paired this high-performance smartphone with the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra, a powerhouse of a tablet available in our office. This experiment involved capturing images on the phone and then editing them on the tablet, providing an interesting but nuanced experience.

Space-Saving Convenience

I’m not a fan of bulky bags when I’m roaming the streets; I prefer to only carry what fits in my pockets. This inclination towards a minimalist approach is one reason I appreciate the compact designs of devices like the Oppo line. While the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra boasts a large 15-inch display, which rivals many laptops, I found its heft to be more cumbersome than beneficial for on-the-go editing.

While I left the Tab S11 Ultra in my hotel due to its size, I appreciated the significant portability advantage it holds over traditional laptops, particularly in its lightweight design and reduced need for bulky chargers.

Editing Challenges

Editing on a tablet does not equate to editing on a desktop. While my familiarity with desktop editing software has set high expectations, I found that the experience on the tablet fell short. The limitations inherent to mobile apps, despite their advances, made the editing process slower and less intuitive.

Visual Feedback

However, where the tablet shines is in the ability to review images. The nearly 15-inch screen allows for a much clearer assessment of the images, making it easier to spot focus issues, motion blur, and other imperfections compared to smaller screens. This aspect felt closer to working on a desktop monitor, making it easier to select the best shots.

Editing Techniques

While the edits I made were relatively minor, they improved my images significantly when crafted on Lightroom rather than relying on the phone's built-in editing tools. Modern smartphones often apply filters aggressively, which can lead to unnatural-looking results. Consequently, the fine-tuning available through Lightroom was more aligned with my editing preferences.

Despite my recognition of the tablet’s potential, I still struggled to replicate the speed and efficiency of my desktop workflow, particularly with mouse-and-keyboard input. Nevertheless, I found satisfaction in the final results produced during my editing sessions.

The Oppo Find X9 Ultra Experience

Regarding the Oppo Find X9 Ultra, I must say it outshines its predecessor in numerous ways. With clearer telephoto shots, stunning color reproduction, and even better low-light performance, this phone has proven itself to be a formidable tool for photographers. That said, its premium price tag of €1,700 may not appeal to everyone.
