Apple's Price Increases Impact India Severely Compared to Other Markets

Source: Date:

Apple has announced global price increases primarily for its Mac lineup, but other devices such as the iPad, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, and HomePods are also affected. While these hikes are worldwide, certain markets—including India—are experiencing much steeper increases than others, such as the US.

Apple price hikes hit India even harder than other regions

Three key factors contribute to the significant price hikes in India. Firstly, all product lines have seen price increases. Secondly, memory and storage upgrade prices have also risen. Finally, Apple India has adjusted its currency conversion rate, resulting in disproportionate increases compared to those in the US, which will impact future pricing as well.

Here is a look at the new starting prices for various Mac models:

ModelCurrent price (INR)Previous price (INR)Difference
MacBook Neo (8/256GB)79,90069,90014.3%
MacBook Air 13 (16/512GB)149,900119,90025%
MacBook Pro 14 (16/1TB)239,900189,90026.3%
iMac (16/256GB)174,900134,90029.7%
Mac mini (16/256GB)94,90059,90058.4%
Mac Studio (36/512GB)279,900214,90030.3%

As illustrated, the price increases in India are significantly higher than those experienced in the US, where the hikes generally range from the high teens to the low twenties percentage-wise. In contrast, most hikes in India exceed 20%, with some even reaching the thirties.

Notably, the price of the 256GB M4 Mac mini, which was discontinued last month, is now higher as the 512GB model has become the new starting point. It's crucial to clarify that the base model for the M4 Mac mini is once again 256GB, but at a higher cost than the previous base 512GB model. An apples-to-apples comparison reveals that the 256GB M4 Mac mini has experienced an astounding 58.3% price increase.

Other Apple products are facing substantial price hikes as well. The iPads have been hit even harder than the Macs, with certain Apple TV 4K models costing nearly double in some configurations. The aging HomePod models have also seen price increases. Notably, the Vision Pro headset is not included in this context, as it has yet to be released in India.

ModelCurrent price (INR)Previous price (INR)Difference
iPad Pro 11 (256GB)139,90099,90040%
iPad Air 11 (128GB)89,90064,90038.5%
iPad (128GB)49,90034,90043%
iPad mini (128GB)69,90049,90040%
Apple TV 4K (64GB)25,90014,90074%
HomePod44,90032,90036.5%
HomePod mini15,90010,90045.9%

Furthermore, Apple has increased its memory and storage upgrade costs. Historically, these upgrades would increase in increments of INR 20,000; now, they have risen to increments of INR 24,000 for memory upgrades and INR 30,000 for higher storage options, meaning not only are the base model prices higher, but upgrades will also be more expensive.

Lastly, Apple appears to have shifted away from its longstanding currency conversion rate of 1 USD = 100 INR. For example, a MacBook Neo priced at $699 is now priced at INR 79,900 instead of the previously expected INR 69,900. This change is significant, as even if prices decrease in the future due to market forces, it seems unlikely that Apple India will revert to the previous currency conversion rate, meaning that prices are unlikely to fall back to prior levels.

This reflects the current state of Apple's pricing in India. The company acknowledged in a statement, “We know this is not welcome news, and we are working tirelessly to find solutions.” However, given its current focus on artificial intelligence, this increase may be part of the challenges the company is attempting to address.
