A regional government newspaper in Hubei has reported that Dongfeng Motor plans to commence mass production and vehicle integration of its new solid-state battery technology in the latter half of 2026. This innovative battery design is expected to extend the driving range of next-generation vehicles beyond 1,000 km on a single charge. Achieving this target could significantly alleviate the driving range anxiety that currently deters many consumers from purchasing electric vehicles.

Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, which rely on liquid electrolytes that can be flammable or explosive under certain conditions, Dongfeng utilizes a stable solid electrolyte material. This substitution greatly reduces the risk of dangerous combustion and explosions, enhancing the safety profile of electric vehicles.

Prior to initiating mass production, Dongfeng conducted thorough safety tests on the new batteries. Results from physical compression tests revealed that the battery cells remained fully operational even after being deformed by 50% under heavy machinery. Additionally, thermal endurance trials indicated that the battery components could withstand direct heat exposure at temperatures of up to 170°C without exhibiting any signs of smoke or fire.

Typically, cold weather significantly affects the performance of modern batteries, often leading to dramatic decreases in capacity. However, Dongfeng demonstrated the robustness of its battery packs in extreme cold conditions earlier this year, successfully retaining over 74% of their electrical charge at temperatures as low as -30°C.

Another key advantage of this new technology is weight reduction; the new battery pack is approximately 30% lighter than traditional liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion batteries. This reduction enables automotive engineers to enhance the driving range of new electric vehicles without the need for heavy, bulky components.

For its manufacturing plan, Dongfeng has opted for an oxide-polymer composite technical route, which is the most suitable option for rapid mass-market adoption. This method utilizes an established raw material supply chain and is compatible with existing factory production equipment. Zhang Wei, head of the solid-state battery laboratory at Dongfeng's research and development institute, confirmed that the company maintains full self-reliance in its core technology, managing everything from basic electrodes to complete battery pack integration.

To expedite engineering development, Dongfeng established the Hubei Solid-State Battery Industry Technology Innovation Consortium in May 2026, linking the car manufacturer with 18 academic and industrial institutions. The company operates a comprehensive development base that integrates laboratory testing, prototype manufacturing, and active pilot lines. Its research team is already designing next-generation fast-charging solid-state batteries and initiatives for higher energy density alternatives, with plans for rollout by 2027.

As one of China's oldest car manufacturers, Dongfeng possesses the necessary factory capacity and financial resources to support these ambitious technological initiatives. In 2025, Dongfeng Motor recorded total sales of 2.47 million vehicles, of which new energy vehicles accounted for 1.05 million units—a year-on-year increase of 21%.

A significant portion of these sales stemmed from the company's own vehicle brands, including Voyah, Yipai, and Nammi. Annual sales from these internal brands surpassed 1.5 million units in 2025, making up over 60% of Dongfeng's total sales volume. The introduction of lighter, safer batteries featuring an energy density of 350 Wh/kg into these popular models later this year is expected to provide Dongfeng with a competitive advantage as global competition intensifies.
