The global automotive market is continuously evolving as international brands adapt their strategies. Chinese automotive powerhouse BYD is making significant strides with the launch of its new model, the Dolphin G. Unlike previous exports that were modifications of existing models, the Dolphin G is specifically designed from the ground up for European drivers. This innovative approach aims to help BYD capture a larger share of the lucrative European market.
Manufactured locally, the Dolphin G will be assembled at BYD's new production facility in Szeged, Hungary, marking it as one of the first vehicles to be built at this site. Buyers can expect to learn about the pricing details later this month, with customer deliveries slated to begin in the fall of 2026.

The Dolphin G measures 4,160 mm in length and 1,825 mm in width, making it 130 mm shorter and 55 mm wider than the battery-powered version of the standard Dolphin available in Europe. The exterior design showcases sleek headlights and an active air intake system, while the front bumper features dedicated airflows aimed at enhancing efficiency. The side profile boasts semi-hidden door handles and darkened D-pillars.
This compact hatchback is designed with city driving in mind, easily fitting into tight European parking spots. While official images reveal its aerodynamic design, recent spy photos from China have provided a first glimpse inside the vehicle. The cabin is characterized by a minimalist design that emphasizes simplicity. A large floating touchscreen dominates the dashboard, with a smaller LCD instrument panel positioned directly behind the steering wheel. The dashboard remains largely uncluttered, as the main gear shifter has been relocated behind the three-spoke steering wheel.

In the center console area, the traditional array of buttons has been replaced with a compact control block, offering a straightforward alternative to more complex dashboards. This control block includes only essential physical switches such as the hazard lights button, a manual driving mode selector, and a volume control knob. Next to these controls is a cup holder and a hidden storage compartment.
Although BYD is renowned for its all-electric vehicles, the Dolphin G features a plug-in hybrid system. This setup integrates a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 72 kW (97 horsepower) with an electric motor that generates 145 kW (194 horsepower). When both power sources are engaged, the total peak output reaches 156 kW, allowing the hatchback to achieve a combined power of 209 horsepower.

Drivers can choose from two LFP battery pack options based on their daily driving needs: a 7.8 kWh entry-level option or a larger 18 kWh variant, which facilitates travel on electric power during urban commutes. When the battery's charge is low, the gasoline engine automatically activates to ensure a seamless driving experience on longer trips.
This hatchback launch coincides with the rapid international growth of BYD. According to recent statistics from China DataTracker, the brand's overseas sales have surged to 135,098 vehicles, reflecting a substantial 70.8% year-on-year increase. BYD clearly aims to leverage the Dolphin G to continue this upward trajectory in Europe, and an aggressive pricing strategy announced this June could significantly challenge established European automakers.
