Spotify Begins Verifying Non-AI Artists to Enhance Authenticity

Source: Date:

Spotify has initiated a verification process for non-AI artists, aiming to boost "authenticity and trust for the artists behind the music." This move also suggests that any artist who lacks verification is likely an AI creation.

The "Verified by Spotify" badge indicates that the artist has consistent listener engagement over time, adheres to Spotify's platform policies, and maintains an identifiable presence both on and off the platform, such as concert dates, merchandise, and linked social media accounts.

Notably, AI-generated or AI-persona artists are currently ineligible for verification. Spotify acknowledges that "the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving," and the company intends to refine its approach moving forward.

The verification badge will begin appearing on artist profiles and next to artist names in search results in the coming weeks. It will display as "Verified by Spotify" along with a light green checkmark icon. Spotify indicates that 99% of artists actively searched by users will be verified at launch, prioritizing those with active fan interest or significant contributions to music culture over functional music creators and content farms aimed at passive or background listening.

Additionally, Spotify is introducing a new beta section on all artist profiles that will highlight details such as career milestones, release activities, and touring information. This feature will be accessible in the About section on mobile across artist profiles in the coming weeks and will also be visible when tapping the Verified by Spotify banner.
