Microsoft Enhances Cross-Device App Resumption on Windows 11 for Android Users
Microsoft is making strides in improving the user experience for Windows 11 with its latest update, aimed at facilitating seamless app resumption from Android devices. Following Apple's Handoff feature, this new functionality allows users to pick up where they left off on certain mobile apps right from their Windows 11 laptops. This expansion opens the door to a more integrated tech experience, especially for Android users.
Resume Android Apps on Your Windows 11 Device
In May 2025, Microsoft introduced the "Cross-Device Resume" feature, initially limited to OneDrive, allowing users to access their recent files like Word documents across devices. You could click notifications to view or edit documents that had been actively worked on within the last five minutes on either your Android or iOS device.
Now, this functionality is expanding to support more applications specifically for Android users. The latest Windows 11 updates, versions 26100.7701 and 26200.7701, are being rolled out to the Release Preview Channel and are adding a host of new apps that support this feature.
New Apps Supporting Cross-Device Resume
The recent updates introduce several popular applications to the Cross-Device Resume functionality, including Spotify, Microsoft's Office suite, and the Edge browser. Additionally, Vivo's own browser, as well as files accessed via Copilot on compatible smartphones from brands like Samsung, Honor, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, are also supported.
These improvements are expected to be available to the public soon, allowing users to make the most of Cross-Device Resume.
A Work in Progress
While this new feature shows promise, it still has a significant way to go to rival Apple’s integrated Handoff capability. However, it’s encouraging to see Microsoft actively evolving this feature since its inception.
Currently, those eager to try it must join the Windows Insider program, as the updates have not yet been rolled out on Microsoft’s public channels. The gradual rollout is anticipated to reach the general public in the upcoming weeks.
Apple's Handoff feature has been a game changer in its ecosystem, allowing seamless task continuity across devices. With Windows 11 striving for similar functionality, Microsoft faces unique challenges due to the diversity of Android devices. Unlike Apple, which controls its entire ecosystem, Microsoft must navigate collaborations with various device manufacturers.
The Future of Integration in Mobile Technology
While the road ahead may be challenging, the movement towards better integration between Windows and mobile technology is promising. Apple's Handoff feature exemplifies a magical experience in switching tasks between devices, and such capabilities are increasingly in demand among users wanting the convenience of a fully interconnected tech environment.
As Microsoft continues to build on this feature and expand app support, the allure of using Windows 11 alongside Android devices could draw many users over from Apple’s ecosystem, given the increased customization options and other unique features they offer.
