In 2024, Google launched its Android theft protection program for devices running Android 10 or later. This initiative is now being expanded to include new features aimed at reducing financial fraud and enhancing personal data protection in the event of device theft.
Devices operating on Android 16 will benefit from improved security measures in response to failed authentication attempts. The Failed Authentication Lock, introduced with Android 15, will now have dedicated toggles in the settings menu to provide users with greater control. This feature locks the device screen after a specified number of failed authentication attempts.

Furthermore, Google is extending its Identity Check to encompass all applications utilizing the Android Biometric Prompt, including banking and Google’s native password manager apps.
To enhance security, Google is increasing the duration of lockouts following excessive failed PIN entries and password attempts. Additionally, Android will offer improved recovery tools for all devices running Android 10 and later. The Remote Lock feature, accessible via android.com/lock, allows users to remotely lock stolen devices through any web browser. Google is also introducing an optional security question to prevent unauthorized users from locking devices remotely.
Moreover, Google is proactively enabling Remote Lock and Theft Detection Lock by default in Brazil, ensuring that all new Android phones sold and activated in the country come equipped with these features out of the box.
