Google Gemini Can Now Edit Generated Files Directly in Chat

Source: Date:

Introduction: Google has removed a major friction point in Gemini. Starting today, users can preview and edit AI-generated files without leaving the chat, making it easier to refine documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, presentations, code, and more.

The update builds on Gemini's file-generation feature introduced in April. Previously, if a generated file needed changes, users had to download or export it first. Now Gemini can open the file in full screen and let you type edits directly. You can also highlight text to ask questions about it, ask Gemini to adjust the wording or visuals, or continue with follow-up prompts.

There is a platform limitation to note. PDF preview and editing work on both web and mobile, but editing for other formats—Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code—is currently available only on the web. The capability is rolling out to all Gemini users in every supported language starting today.
