In an impressive display of innovation and value, BYD's Fang Cheng Bao has unveiled its latest offerings - the Formula S and Formula S GT. These electric vehicles are set to challenge traditional norms in the automotive industry by blending striking design, advanced technology, and exceptional performance with highly competitive pricing. This article explores the features and specifications of these groundbreaking new models that promise to reshape the electric vehicle market in China and beyond.

For the last few years, Fang Cheng Bao has been synonymous with rugged, off-road electric vehicles aimed at affluent adventurers. However, the brand has taken a surprising turn by introducing two sleek electric sedans that directly compete with popular models like the Xiaomi SU7 and Tesla Model 3.

The new Formula S coupe-styled sedan and the Formula S GT shooting brake draw inspiration from the Fang Cheng Bao Super 9 concept. The real surprise, however, comes from their aggressive pricing strategy. When pre-orders commenced on August 20, the price range was initially set between RMB 230,000 and RMB 280,000. Upon launch, BYD revealed a starting price of RMB 189,900 (approximately €23,800), with the top variant priced at RMB 229,900 (around €28,900). This marks a significant reduction, offering a discount of nearly RMB 40,100 (almost $6,000) even before the first sale.

The aesthetically pleasing Formula S GT shooting brake starts at RMB 219,900 (about €27,600). When compared to the Tesla Model 3, which starts at RMB 235,500, or the Xiaomi SU7 at RMB 215,900, the Fang Cheng Bao models are not just more competitively priced, but they also offer potentially superior features.

In terms of dimensions, the Formula S is larger than its American rival – measuring 5,060 mm in length, 1,967 mm in width, and 1,483 mm in height with a 2,960 mm wheelbase. The Formula S GT, while shorter at 5,025 mm, shares the same width and wheelbase, illustrating a commitment to spacious interiors. In contrast, the Tesla Model 3 measures just 4,720 mm in length, highlighting BYD's focus on delivering ample passenger space at a compact executive price.

Both models are equipped with BYD's advanced second-generation Blade Battery technology and high-performance electrical architecture, with astonishing charging capabilities. Connecting either vehicle to a rapid-charging station allows the battery to charge from 10% to 70% in merely five minutes; in nine minutes, it reaches 97% capacity.

The base Formula S features a 76.744 kWh battery, providing an impressive 730 km range according to the CLTC cycle, whereas the long-range version offers a 92.093 kWh battery for 900 km of travel. The Formula S GT comes standard with the larger battery, achieving 850 km and 730 km in dual-motor configurations. Even the all-wheel-drive Formula S sedan boasts a range of 750 km.

The single-motor options for the rear-wheel-drive Formula S yield either 245 kW (329 hp) or 300 kW (402 hp), while the Formula S GT is fitted with the more powerful 300 kW motor from the start. Buyers opting for all-wheel-drive models will enjoy a whopping 490 kW of combined performance, equating to 657 horsepower.

Notably, the Formula S series also introduces the innovative DiSus-M magnetic suspension system, allowing optimal stiffness adjustments in milliseconds to enhance handling and comfort. For those preferring a softer ride, BYD offers the DiSus-A air suspension, both of which are equally priced across various trims to encourage driver preference over budget constraints.

The interior of the Formula S combines modern digital features with tactile elements, featuring a stunning 26-inch augmented reality head-up display, luxury zero-gravity seating, and an audio system tuned by the renowned French brand Devialet. A unique modular hardware ecosystem allows owners to customize their cabin with various accessories.

On the technology front, both models come equipped with a LiDAR sensor and BYD's "God's Eye B" driver-assistance suite, enabling full urban and highway navigation in autopilot mode, along with automated parking features. BYD aims to leverage this advanced technology to compete effectively against Silicon Valley disruptors.
