Waymo, the leader in autonomous ride-hailing technology, has revealed plans to expand its services to Singapore, marking an important milestone in its international growth strategy. Following its recent expansions in the United States, the company is now set to bring its innovative robotaxi service to the bustling city-state, enhancing transportation options for residents and visitors alike.
The much-anticipated launch is scheduled for 2028. However, to ensure an efficient adaptation to Singapore's unique driving conditions, Waymo will commence operations earlier, in 2027, with specially trained personnel navigating the streets manually. This preparatory phase will allow the Waymo Driver to adapt to Singapore's road layout and challenging weather conditions, including heavy monsoon rains. The fleet will primarily consist of Waymo's Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicles, which are expected to arrive in the region in the upcoming months.
In its commitment to complement Singapore’s robust public transportation framework, Waymo will join forces with local authorities, specifically the Ministry of Transport and the Land Transport Authority. During a recent event, Singapore’s Minister for Transport, Jeffrey Siow, was seen meeting with Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana to discuss this exciting venture.
