BYD Yuan Up (Atto 2): A Game Changer in Affordable Electric Vehicles

Source: Date:

In a world where affordable electric vehicles (EVs) often come with compromises on range, quality, and technology, BYD is changing the narrative with its newly launched Yuan Up, also known as the Atto 2 in international markets. Breaking through the barriers that have held back many legacy automakers, BYD's latest offering provides a compelling option for budget-conscious consumers without sacrificing the features that make EVs appealing. Let’s delve into what makes the Yuan Up such an attractive proposition for buyers both in China and around the globe.

Many consider the dream of an affordable, long-range electric vehicle as aspirational at best, particularly in Western markets where high prices dominate the scene. However, in Shenzhen, BYD challenges this notion with the new pricing and specifications of the updated Yuan Up. This compact crossover, known internationally as the Atto 2, redefines what consumers can expect from affordable EVs.

In its home market, the Yuan Up starts at a price of RMB 74,800, equivalent to just €9,520. With additional trade-in incentives, the price can drop to as low as RMB 69,800 (€8,890). For potential buyers in Europe or North America, where even compact hatchbacks can reach €35,000 without basic features like alloy wheels, the pricing of the Yuan Up feels almost mythical.

This updated Atto 2 measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, boasting a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. When compared to competitors like the Geely Xingyuan, which has been leading domestic sales with over 260,000 units sold through August, the BYD offers a bold SUV aesthetic while remaining compact enough for city driving.

BYD has streamlined its powertrain choices for the new Feichi Edition, equipping all trims with a single front-mounted permanent-magnet motor that delivers 70 kW and 180 Nm of torque. This move does away with the more powerful 130 kW options of previous models, with the company asserting that 94 hp is sufficient for daily urban commuting.

The standout feature is undoubtedly the energy storage capacity. BYD has integrated a new 51.13 kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery, courtesy of its FinDreams division. This allows the Yuan Up to achieve a CLTC range of up to 501 km, surpassing the previous limit of 401 km. This enhancement makes a real-world range of around 370 km on a WLTC cycle possible, revolutionizing the entry-level EV market. Combined with the capacity for DC fast charging—taking the battery from 30% to 80% in just half an hour—range anxiety becomes a thing of the past.

Inside, the cabin features innovative ergonomic designs, such as relocating the gear selector to a steering-column stalk, freeing up space for a 50W air-cooled wireless phone charger. The higher trims present enticing color options like Energetic Yellow and Oxygen Blue, and come equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels designed for improved aerodynamics. Technological offerings include a 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen powered by the DiLink 100 system, an 8.8-inch driver display, and advanced four-zone voice recognition. The rear bench folds down in a sixty-forty split, allowing for a remarkable cargo capacity of up to 1,320 l.

Navigating the trim options may require some parsing, as top models can reach RMB 104,800 (€13,340). BYD has strategically divided its advanced driver assistance technologies across the lineup, allowing buyers to prioritize either the extended range or the sophisticated autonomous features but not both within the same trim level. This approach ensures lower base prices while catering to tech-savvy consumers who may be willing to spend more.

With sales figures indicating a strong demand for the Atto 2 family—surpassing twenty-two thousand monthly deliveries—BYD is redefining what consumers can expect from electric crossovers at an accessible price. Offering such an impressive blend of range, quality, and technology at the price point of a used hatchback in the West signals a significant transformation in the automotive landscape—especially within China.
