Geely Transforms Volvo into a Luxury EV Powerhouse in Europe

In a surprising twist of fate, Zhejiang Geely is set to leverage Volvo’s European production facilities to launch its luxury electric vehicle (EV) line, marking a significant shift in the automotive landscape. Since acquiring Volvo from Ford in 2010, Geely has transformed the company from a mere custodian of Swedish engineering to the epicenter of a lavish electric fleet. With the transition under new leadership, Geely aims not only to produce premium vehicles but also to redefine the EV market in Europe, challenging established luxury brands.

When Geely acquired Volvo in 2010, many industry experts believed the Chinese conglomerate would merely exploit its technology. However, 16 years later, it's clear that Geely has ambitious plans for Volvo. Under the leadership of An Conghui, Geely is set to convert Volvo's European assembly lines into a hub for its high-end electric vehicles, with production scheduled to commence in 2028.

This strategy ingeniously sidesteps tariffs while elevating brand prestige. Geely’s diverse automotive offerings range from its mass-market Geely Galaxy to its sporty Lynk & Co and ultra-luxurious Zeekr models. The company's well-positioned manufacturing facilities—including the historic Torslanda plant in Sweden, a large facility in Ghent, Belgium, and a new EV factory set to launch in Košice, Slovakia—are perfectly placed to fulfill this vision.

Additionally, Geely's collaboration with Ford at the Valencia plant in Spain will further augment its European manufacturing capability, enabling the production of two Geely-branded models starting in 2028.

What products can European consumers expect? Geely insiders suggest flagships like the Lynk & Co 900, Zeekr 8X, and the impressive Zeekr 9X. The stats are staggering: the Zeekr 9X measures 5,239 mm in length and boasts a massive 3,169 mm wheelbase, dwarfing competitors like the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and the BMW iX.

Its performance metrics are equally riveting. The Zeekr 9X combines a turbocharged combustion engine with a tri-motor electric system, unveiling a jaw-dropping output of 1,381 horsepower and unique luxuries, such as advanced lighting and high-end audio systems. Offered at a competitive price point, it promises to disrupt the current market dominated by pricier German cars.

In the first half of 2026, Geely maintained its position among the world's top automakers with a 4.6% market share. While brands like Geely EX2 dominate the everyday commuter market, the focus is now shifting towards luxury EVs that could potentially match the performance of high-end diesel vehicles.

One of the most anticipated advancements is the introduction of solid-state battery technology across Geely's lineup, including Volvo, Polestar, and others, set to begin real-world trials in 2027. With energy densities two to four times that of current lithium-ion technologies, these new batteries could allow single-charge ranges exceeding 1,000 km, setting new standards in electric vehicle performance.

Geely's collaboration with Dow Chemical aims to perfect this cutting-edge battery technology, preparing for a future where EVs are not just a viable alternative but a desirable choice for all consumers.

As Geely embarks on this transformative journey, it is clear that Volvo will play a pivotal role in the company’s ambitious plans to reshape the European luxury automobile market.
