Mercedes-Benz has officially entered a new segment of the market with its premium passenger van, the VLE. Production started last week at the company's historic facility in Vitoria, Spain, with the first customer deliveries already underway alongside the launch of series production.
The German automaker designed this new electric van to offer significantly more space than standard family minivans. The short-wheelbase VLE 300 measures 209 inches in length, 78.7 inches in width, and 76.5 inches in height, featuring a long wheelbase of 131.6 inches. The extended version adds an extra 6.9 inches, resulting in a total length of 215.9 inches.
During the ordering period in spring and summer 2026, Mercedes-Benz is concentrating production on the premium launch editions of the front-wheel-drive VLE 300. This model features a single electric motor that generates 272 horsepower, powered by a 115 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Thanks to this substantial battery, the van achieves an official WLTP driving range of up to 443 miles on a full charge, depending on selected wheel sizes and seating configurations.
While large passenger vans are not designed for high speed, the new VLE offers impressive everyday performance, completing the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds. Though it may be slower than high-performance electric SUVs from competitors like Tesla and Lucid, it offers a surprising level of power for those expecting a sluggish commercial van.
Driving a van of this size can often feel like maneuvering a heavy delivery truck, but Mercedes-Benz has incorporated advanced chassis technology to mitigate this challenge. The VLE is equipped with a standard rear-axle steering system that can pivot the rear wheels by up to seven degrees, reducing the turning radius to a compact 35.8 ft and making it easier to navigate tight urban streets and multi-story parking garages.
Long road trips demand rapid charging capabilities, and the VLE's electrical architecture supports high power levels. It features an advanced 800V setup that can accept up to 300 kW from a compatible DC fast-charging station. This allows drivers to gain approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes. Under optimal conditions, the high-voltage battery can provide up to 221 miles of range within that same quick timeframe – making charging stops potentially faster than ordering a premium coffee.
The interior emphasizes modular flexibility and high-end luxury for passengers. Owners can easily slide, rearrange, or remove individual rear seats and benches, which are mounted on a mechanical rolling track system. This enables the quick transformation of the VLE from an eight-person commuter vehicle into a spacious cargo transporter within minutes.
The ultimate Grand Limousine trim features a pair of electric Grand Comfort Seats in the middle row. These seats enhance comfort with optional amenities such as an extra pillow, individual armrests, integrated cup holders, a wireless smartphone charging pad, pneumatic lumbar support, a massage feature, and an adjustable calf leg rest.
The VLE lineup is set to expand around September 2026, when Mercedes-Benz will introduce additional trims for customer orders. A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive VLE 400 4MATIC will debut, enhancing total output to 413 horsepower for those needing extra traction in winter conditions. Families will also have the option to customize their layouts from five to eight seats, while drivers seeking a sportier aesthetic can choose the AMG Line or AMG Line Plus packages.
As expected, this level of premium engineering and battery technology comes at a significant cost. In Germany, the high-spec launch edition of the VLE 300 starts at $96,370, and opting for every luxury feature can easily elevate the price above $120,000. A standard entry-level version is anticipated later this year, starting at approximately $82,600 for a five-seat configuration.
