Apple's Hardware Chief Restructures Teams to Accelerate Product Development

Apple is set to appoint a new CEO later this year, with Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, stepping in for Tim Cook. Along with this leadership change, the company has announced a significant restructuring. Johny Srouji has been named the new Chief Hardware Officer, uniting the hardware engineering and hardware technologies teams.

Apple's new CHO is doing another team reshuffle to speed up product development

Shortly after assuming his new role, Srouji initiated a major reshuffle. Kate Bergeron will transfer responsibility for primary product design management to two of her deputies while focusing on product reliability. She is taking over the role previously held by Tom Marleb, who will now lead the hardware engineering team. Moreover, Bergeron will maintain oversight of the development of materials used by Apple.

Srouji's reorganization aims for greater integration between the Apple Silicon teams and the teams responsible for specific product development. This move is intended to accelerate both the development and innovation processes.

The reshuffle extends beyond leadership roles, as many other team members are seeing their responsibilities expanded.

Only time will reveal the effectiveness of the new team structure, but it’s clear that Apple needs to act decisively. The company’s product development has been noticeably sluggish in recent years, with certain products, such as AirPower, being announced without ever seeing widespread release.
