At the Google I/O 2026 conference, the tech giant revealed Wear OS 7, the latest iteration of its smartwatch operating system based on Android 17. This update introduces several innovative features, including Widgets, Live Updates, and Gemini Intelligence on select smartwatches.
According to Google, Wear OS 7 offers a battery life enhancement of up to 10 percent for smartwatches upgrading from Wear OS 6.

The new Widgets feature in Wear OS 7 is designed to be flexible and dynamic, available in 2x1 and 2x2 layouts, mirroring the format of widgets found on Android smartphones.
Another notable enhancement is the introduction of Live Updates, which allows apps to display real-time information at a glance.

Additionally, Wear OS 7 upgrades system media controls, introducing per-app media auto-launch settings and seamless audio routing via the Remote Output Switcher.
The platform now features a Wear Workout Tracker for a standardized workout tracking experience and incorporates support for Watch Face Format v5.
Select smartwatches launching later this year will also benefit from Gemini Intelligence, which enables more advanced and intelligent interactions. The update introduces a new App Functions API, allowing developers to integrate apps with AI assistants, including Gemini.

Moreover, Google has confirmed that task automation will be available on smartwatches with Wear OS 7. Users can use voice commands for actions like placing orders on DoorDash.
Developers can explore Google’s new smartwatch software through the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, with the official release set for later this year.
