Comcast Shifts Its Focus to Wireless with Xfinity Mobile Expansion

In a strategic move to capitalize on the growing demand for mobile services, Comcast, the parent company of Xfinity, is prioritizing its wireless division, Xfinity Mobile. This transition marks a significant shift in the company's business model, as it seeks to enhance its competitive edge in the telecommunications landscape.

Comcast, traditionally recognized for its cable and internet services, ventured into the wireless market with the launch of Xfinity Mobile in April 2017. This MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) utilizes Verizon's 4G and 5G networks while also leveraging a vast network of home and business hotspots.

Xfinity Mobile Takes the Lead

According to Steve Croney, CEO of Comcast's Connectivity & Platforms unit, the company is now placing wireless services at the forefront of its strategy, focusing on an aggressive expansion approach.

Record Growth for Xfinity Mobile

In the first quarter of 2026, Xfinity Mobile reported an impressive increase, reaching 9.73 million lines. This period witnessed a remarkable addition of 435,000 lines, attributed to a promotional offer providing new and existing subscribers with a free line for the first year.
However, the critical concern remains how many subscribers will transition from free lines to paid services in the long term.
Amid economic uncertainties, there is an opportunity for MVNOs like Xfinity Mobile to attract customers seeking cost-effective alternatives to the major carriers—AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. With ongoing investments, Comcast aims to fortify its wireless business, which is already profitable.

The Convergence Challenge

When Xfinity Mobile launched, Comcast indicated it did not aim to be a major player in the industry; instead, it viewed the MVNO as an enhancement for its existing broadband subscribers. The major carriers have been pursuing convergence strategies to integrate mobile and home internet services seamlessly. This trend involves bundling mobile with home internet offerings and simplifying billing processes. Comcast's Croney asserts the need for a proactive approach in competing within this evolving landscape.

Updated Plans from Xfinity Mobile

In an effort to streamline its services, Xfinity Mobile has shifted to offering two unlimited plans: the Mobile Select plan, which starts free for the first year, then $30 monthly, and the Mobile Plus plan, which is $15 for the first year and $45 thereafter. Both plans include unlimited talk, text, and data, with various additional features designed to cater to different consumer needs.
Despite challenges faced by its broadband unit, which has seen subscriber losses, revised pricing and promotional strategies have helped Comcast improve subscriber retention in that segment.
As Xfinity Mobile continues to face stiff competition from other MVNOs such as Visible, Google Fi, and Mint Mobile, it remains to be seen if Comcast's heightened focus on wireless will yield substantial new business—a question that may be answered with the upcoming Q2 performance reports.
