Passkeys offer a robust solution for secure authentication, utilizing established cryptographic principles that significantly ease the login process compared to traditional passwords. This innovative system generates a secure private key stored locally on your device, paired with a corresponding public key shared with the websites, services, or apps you wish to access. To log in, users simply authenticate with a biometric method—such as a fingerprint or Face ID—proving ownership of the public key. While this description simplifies the concept, the security of modern cryptography makes passkeys an excellent alternative to memorizing and entering passwords.

However, a potential issue arises if you switch devices, such as when your phone breaks or you upgrade to a new one. It's crucial to have a convenient and secure way to transfer your private key without needing to create a new key pair and distribute the public key again. Fortunately, the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP), an emerging industry standard supported by the FIDO Alliance, addresses this need.
If you're using an iOS 16 or macOS 16 device, or a leading password manager like Bitwarden or 1Password, you can already utilize CXP for passkey migration across devices. Despite its involvement as a CXP supporter, Google has not yet officially integrated the protocol into Google Password Manager or Android.
Google Password Manager Passkey Migration
Recently, our colleagues at Android Authority uncovered a hidden interface within Google Password Manager that facilitates the import and export of passkeys. This development is significant, as the CXP transfer process on Android devices relies on Google Play Services and Google Password Manager to manage the exchange of keys between providers. This discovery indicates that the foundational technology is prepared for implementation. It is likely that passkey migration options will soon become available not only in Google Password Manager but also in other Android-compatible managers that support passkeys, such as Samsung Pass.
If you continue to struggle with traditional password management, now is a great time to consider transitioning to passkeys where they are available.
