Verizon Supports Unpaid Federal Workers Amid Government Shutdown
In light of the ongoing partial government shutdown affecting countless federal employees, Verizon is stepping up to offer financial relief to unpaid workers, particularly those within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The initiative entails waiving late fees and providing flexible payment arrangements for affected individuals who can verify their employment status. This effort aims to alleviate the financial burden on federal workers during this challenging time.
Assistance for Verified Federal Employees
Verizon’s offer is specifically extended to unpaid federal employees, including those from the DHS. Workers can receive assistance by contacting Verizon at 1-800-Verizon (1-800-922-0204) and providing proof of their employment. This measure is particularly relevant for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees who have faced significant inconveniences due to lack of pay amidst the shutdown that began in February, resulting from a stalled funding bill in Congress. Fortunately, recent executive orders suggest TSA workers will see their pay restored soon.
Eligibility and Limitations of the Offer
While TSA employees have been adversely impacted, workers from agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are receiving their pay due to provisions in the Big Beautiful Bill passed last July. Thus, employees from these agencies will not qualify for the payment relief plans from Verizon.
Verizon's History of Customer Support
This isn't the first time Verizon has taken steps to assist customers in need. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the carrier, alongside major telecommunication companies like AT&T and T-Mobile, committed to the Keep Americans Connected Pledge. This initiative aimed to ensure that residential and small business customers wouldn't lose service due to unpaid bills while suspending late fees and expanding Wi-Fi access.
Additional Support During the Pandemic
Furthermore, during the pandemic from March 25 to April 30, 2020, Verizon provided customers with 15GB of complimentary 4G LTE hotspot data, aiding those working from home or needing internet access for various purposes.
Other Affected Agencies
Aside from the TSA, other federal agencies experiencing funding issues include the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Secret Service, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), all of which are grappling with the impact of the current shutdown.
