Nissan has announced a memorandum of understanding with Wayve and Uber to collaboratively develop robotaxi services in Japan, with a pilot program set to launch in Tokyo later this year. Initially, these services will include a trained safety operator in the vehicle.
The autonomous rides will utilize the Nissan Leaf, powered by Wayve's AI Driver. Riders will access the service via the Uber app, as Uber seeks to partner with a licensed taxi company in Japan and is currently in the process of selecting the right partner.

The collaboration aims to integrate Wayve's comprehensive AI autonomous driving system into Nissan's vehicles, connecting seamlessly with Uber's app to match robotaxis with users in need of transportation.

This partnership marks Uber's first venture into autonomous vehicles in Japan and is part of a broader rollout of robotaxi services by Uber and Wayve, which plans to operate in more than ten cities globally.
