When considering new electric vehicles, many buyers focus primarily on range. The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA impresses with an EPA-estimated range of 374 miles for the base CLA 250+ rear-wheel-drive model. However, the German manufacturer emphasizes that safety ratings are equally important, highlighting the CLA's outstanding crash test results.
Mercedes-Benz unveiled this model in March, with early European deliveries beginning in July. Although initial customers ordered the car before official safety ratings were released, they now have reassurance thanks to the latest test outcomes.
The independent European safety authority, Euro NCAP, rigorously tested the electric sedan and awarded the CLA EQ a top five-star overall rating. It excelled in all four key testing categories, outperforming rivals including the new Porsche Cayenne.
The CLA 250+ EQ demonstrated exceptional safety performance across multiple areas. In the Adult Occupant Protection category, it achieved an impressive 94%, reflecting its robust structure and advanced safety systems.
Child Occupant Protection was nearly as strong, with an 89% score. Notably, the vehicle detects when a child seat is installed and automatically disables the relevant airbags, showcasing thoughtful safety innovation.
Regarding Vulnerable Road User protection—covering pedestrians and cyclists—the CLA earned a remarkable 93%, thanks to its highly effective automatic emergency braking system.
In the Safety Assist category, which includes technologies designed to prevent accidents, the CLA scored 85%. For context, the Mazda CX-5 also shares a top score of 93% in Vulnerable Road User protection alongside the CLA.
