Over the last decade, minivans have largely disappeared as SUVs dominated the automotive landscape. However, French automaker Citroen is challenging that trend with its boldly designed, bright orange ELO concept. This electric vehicle serves as a "laboratory of ideas," demonstrating that the practical, boxy minivan form still holds promise—especially when powered by batteries.

The ELO concept—named after rEst, pLay, and wOrk—is a modern homage to the compact European vans of the past. Designed for versatility, it can accommodate travel, relaxation, entertainment, and work. Built on a fully electric platform, the ELO maximizes interior space, a key advantage of electric vehicle architecture. While Citroen has not yet disclosed motor or battery specifications, the company confirms the ELO is optimized for urban environments.

Measuring 13.45 feet long—similar to Citroen's former C3 Picasso and slightly longer than the current e-C3—the ELO features a distinct van-like silhouette. Its exterior design includes squared LED headlights and taillights, with a prominent illuminated Citroen badge at the front. Large sliding doors provide an expansive 6.3-foot-wide entry, enhancing accessibility. The concept rides on striking 21-inch wheels with futuristic covers, blending functionality with a playful aesthetic.

Inside, the ELO defies conventional automotive design. The cabin bursts with vibrant orange and features a modular layout accommodating either four or six occupants. Uniquely, the driver’s seat is centrally positioned, flanked by two removable passenger seats just behind, and a full bench seating three in the rear. The driver’s seat can swivel completely around, transforming the front space into a meeting room or lounge area.

Functionality remains paramount throughout the design. Instead of a traditional bulky center console, the ELO utilizes a slim digital display beneath the windshield. Its steering wheel incorporates a futuristic shape with dual joystick controls and simple stalks, eliminating the need for a conventional touchscreen. Clever storage solutions are integrated into door panels and side compartments, emphasizing practical use.

Reflecting its name, the ELO easily adapts for rest and leisure. The rear cabin can convert into a sleeping area using durable, inflatable Dropstitch mattresses, stowed conveniently in the trunk. For entertainment, a drop-down screen transforms the interior into a home theater. This high level of flexibility highlights Citroen’s vision of a true multi-purpose electric vehicle.

Citroen CEO Xavier Chardon described the ELO as "a powerful message that carries our vision of what Citroen should be," while Design Director Pierre Leclercq called it "a burst of energy" focused on efficiency. The concept will debut at the Brussels Motor Show in January 2026. Although it is not slated for production, its design language is expected to influence a new subcompact model projected for around 2028.
