Finnish company Jolla has announced a new smartphone after a long hiatus. Named the Jolla Phone, it is promoted as an "independent European Do It Together (DIT) Linux phone."

Jolla highlights that the Jolla Phone is a "real Linux phone," running genuine Linux under the hood rather than a pseudo-Linux system. From the user’s perspective, it operates on Sailfish OS version 5, a privacy-focused mobile operating system touted as "the only European mobile operating system."

Jolla emphasizes privacy features of Sailfish OS, including no tracking, no data calling home, and no hidden analytics. While the system supports Android applications, users can fully detach their phone from Google services when desired.

The Jolla Phone is equipped with a high-performance MediaTek SoC, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage expandable via microSD.

The device features a 6.36-inch Full HD AMOLED display with a pixel density of 390 ppi, protected by Gorilla Glass. Its camera setup includes a 50MP main sensor and a 13MP ultrawide rear camera. Details about the front-facing selfie camera remain undisclosed.

Powering the phone is a 5,500 mAh user-replaceable battery. The back cover is also replaceable and offered in three colors: Snow White, Kaamos Black, and The Orange.

Additional features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, NFC, 5G connectivity, dual-SIM support, and a physical privacy switch. This switch allows users to disable the microphone, camera, Bluetooth, and other sensors instantly. Jolla guarantees a minimum of five years of Sailfish OS support for the device.

Jolla notes that final specifications are subject to confirmation upon production and minor changes may occur. Production will proceed only if at least 2,000 units are pre-ordered by January 4, 2026. Currently, over 1,200 pre-orders have been received.

Interested buyers can pre-order the phone by placing a €99 down payment. The full retail price after release will be €499, with a standard price anticipated between €599 and €699. Pre-order customers will receive a special edition back cover as a thank-you gift.

The company promises to refund pre-orders if the minimum order quantity is not met. Given the current interest, the Jolla Phone is likely to go into production.
