Google’s Android NameDrop Alternative Demonstrated in New Video, Focuses on Contact Sharing

Source: Date:

In November, it was revealed that Google is developing a feature similar to Apple’s NameDrop, designed to work on Android devices. Apple introduced NameDrop in 2023, allowing iPhone users to share files and contact information by simply bringing their phones close together.

Google’s version appears to prioritize contact sharing initially. The video below demonstrates how this Android feature will function in practice.

The official name for the feature remains undecided. During development, it has been referred to as Gesture Exchange and Contact Exchange. One of these may become the final commercial name, though a more appealing title is likely to be chosen by Google’s marketing teams.

The feature is still under active development and not yet ready for release. Although the animation in the video operates smoothly, actual contact exchange is currently non-functional. This suggests a launch timeframe sometime in 2026.

Users may need to carefully align the NFC antennas of their Android devices to initiate the connection. Unlike iPhones, where the NFC antenna placement is consistently at the top, Android smartphones vary significantly in antenna location.
