Netflix Ends Casting Support from Mobile Devices to Most Modern TVs

According to a report from Android Authority, Netflix has quietly removed the ability to cast shows directly from its mobile applications to the majority of modern televisions and TV streaming devices. A Netflix support page confirms that the app “no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices.” Users who want to watch Netflix on their TV will now need to navigate the app using the TV or streaming device’s remote control instead of casting from their phone or tablet.

A Predictable Shift from Netflix

Netflix dropped AirPlay support

Netflix had already discontinued AirPlay support several years ago, so this removal of casting largely aligns with the company’s gradual move away from mobile-based casting features.

Votes: 29

65.52% of respondents said they mostly use the TV app, while 13.79% mainly cast from their phones and another 13.79% do not use Netflix at all.

The Reason: Managing Extra Screens

This change reflects Netflix’s approach to managing simultaneous streams across multiple devices. By requiring users to control playback through the TV app or device remote, Netflix can better regulate viewing and limit the use of additional screens. This move helps in enforcing account usage policies and potentially encourages using Netflix on primary devices rather than remote casting.
