BMW's latest iX3, built on the innovative Neue Klasse platform, addresses one of the biggest concerns for electric vehicle drivers: long-distance travel. This new all-electric SUV combines an impressive driving range with charging speeds that outperform most competitors.

The key to its rapid charging lies in the advanced 800V architecture. BMW officially reports that the iX3 supports an outstanding maximum of 400 kW DC fast charging. This capability is enabled by the vehicle’s sixth-generation battery technology, which employs new cylindrical cells designed to store more energy and charge faster than traditional prismatic cells. BMW estimates that, under optimal conditions, the iX3 can charge from nearly empty (10%) to 80% in just 21 minutes.

While manufacturer claims can sometimes be optimistic, a recent real-world test conducted in Spain demonstrated the iX3’s impressive charging performance. Journalists tested the iX3 50 xDrive at an Ionity station offering up to 350 kW of power.

With the vehicle’s navigation system preconditioning the battery for optimal charging, the iX3 was ready upon arrival. Plugged in at a healthy 45% state of charge (SoC), it quickly reached a peak charge rate of 321 kW — remarkably fast for a battery only half full. Even as charging speed typically declines as the battery fills, the iX3 maintained impressive performance, adding 21 kWh in five minutes and averaging around 250 kW throughout the session.

The iX3 50 xDrive comes equipped with a substantial 108.7 kWh battery pack, delivering an excellent range that alleviates range anxiety. Official WLTP tests in Europe rate its driving range at up to 500 miles on a full charge. Real-world driving estimates conservatively exceed 373 miles, making extended trips comfortable and convenient.

Performance is equally impressive thanks to the all-wheel-drive xDrive system powered by dual electric motors generating a combined 469 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. This setup allows the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of 130 mph.

Beyond its technological advances, the iX3 remains practical for families. The SUV measures 15.68 ft long, 6.2 ft wide, and 5.35 ft tall, with a lengthy 9.48 ft wheelbase providing ample interior space. Cargo capacity is generous, offering 18.4 ft³ behind the rear seats and expanding to 61.8 ft³ when seats are folded. Additionally, a small front trunk adds another 2.05 ft³ of storage.

This blend of cutting-edge charging technology, substantial range, and family-friendly dimensions positions the new iX3 as a leading premium electric SUV. Starting at around $79,700 in Europe, BMW’s new electric offering demonstrates that the balance between performance and range has nearly vanished.
