Google is rolling out an innovative hotspot feature in the latest Android Canary build that allows phones to broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 6 GHz bands simultaneously. This new “2.4 and 6 GHz” option under the Speed & Compatibility menu means users no longer have to sacrifice speed for compatibility when tethering their devices.
With this combined mode, your Android device broadcasts both frequencies simultaneously. Newer devices that support 6 GHz connect at blazing fast speeds, while older or budget models automatically fall back to the 2.4 GHz band, ensuring seamless connectivity without manual adjustments.
How often do you use your phone as a hotspot?
Why this update matters
- New devices can connect via 6 GHz for much faster speeds.
- Legacy devices automatically use the more compatible 2.4 GHz band.
- This eliminates the need to switch hotspot modes manually based on your connected device.
This update brings Android hotspot behavior closer to modern dual- or tri-band routers by intelligently managing connections across bands. As widespread adoption of Wi-Fi 7 grows, this dynamic approach will enhance the usefulness of Android hotspots even further.
It also reflects recent shifts in U.S. regulatory policies. Starting with Pixel phones unlocking 6 GHz hotspots, this combined mode builds on that foundation. Other Android manufacturers are expected to add this feature as they upgrade devices to Android 16.
Why wasn't this done sooner?
Although not the flashiest feature, this hotspot enhancement delivers tangible improvements for users who frequently tether their phones. Many rely on hotspots as their primary internet source, making this an important practical upgrade.
The initial standalone 6 GHz hotspot on Pixel devices was a step forward, but the new dual-band broadcasting mode is far more versatile. With more Android phones equipped for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, treating hotspots like intelligent, multi-band routers is a logical and overdue evolution.
