BMW's new iX3, developed on the innovative "Neue Klasse" platform, addresses a major concern for EV drivers: long-distance travel. This battery-powered SUV offers an impressive driving range alongside charging capabilities that outperform many competitors.

The key to its rapid charging lies in the advanced 800V architecture. BMW officially states that the iX3 can support a maximum DC fast charging power of up to 400 kW. This is enabled by the car's sixth-generation battery technology, which employs new cylindrical cells delivering higher energy density and faster charging compared to traditional prismatic cells. Under optimal conditions, BMW claims the iX3 can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes.

While manufacturers’ claims often look best on paper, a recent real-world evaluation in Spain confirmed how close the BMW iX3 approaches its theoretical charging potential. Journalists tested the iX3 50 xDrive at an Ionity charging station capable of delivering up to 350 kW.

With the vehicle’s navigation system set to precondition the battery, the iX3 was primed for optimal charging. Starting at a solid 45% state of charge (SoC), the SUV quickly reached a peak charging rate of 321 kW—a remarkable feat for a battery already nearly half charged. During the session, the iX3 added 21 kWh of energy in just five minutes, maintaining an average charging power around 250 kW.

The new iX3 50 xDrive is equipped with a substantial 108.7 kWh battery pack, yielding an outstanding range that significantly reduces range anxiety. Official WLTP ratings in Europe estimate a driving range of up to 805 km on a full charge, while real-world driving typically delivers over 600 km, making long trips effortless.

Performance is impressive as well. The all-wheel-drive "xDrive" system, powered by dual electric motors, produces a combined 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. This enables the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km/h.

Beyond its advanced electric capabilities, the iX3 offers practicality suited for families. Measuring 4.78 m in length, 1.89 m in width, and 1.63 m in height, it features a generous 2.89 m wheelbase that provides ample interior space. Cargo capacity is 520 liters behind the rear seats, expandable to an impressive 1,750 liters with the seats folded down. Additionally, a front trunk offers another 58 liters of storage space.

This blend of fast charging, extended range, and spacious design positions the new iX3 strongly in the premium electric SUV market. Priced from approximately €68,000 in Europe, it demonstrates that performance and range compromises are becoming a thing of the past.
