Sony Launches Lytia 901: A Powerful 200MP 1/1.12" Smartphone Camera Sensor

Source: Date:

Sony has officially introduced the highly anticipated Lytia 901, its latest 200MP smartphone camera sensor designed to compete with Samsung's 200MP solutions. The sensor features a 1/1.12" type size with a 14.287mm diagonal, promising exceptional high-definition image quality even when using up to 4x in-sensor zoom.

Equipped with 0.7 μm pixels, the Lytia 901 employs a Quad-Quad Bayer Coding (QQBC) array, clustering 4x4 adjacent pixels with identical color filters. This configuration processes signals from 16 pixels as a single unit, capturing 12.5MP images in this mode.

The sensor's in-sensor zoom utilizes remosaicing technology to convert clustered pixels back into a standard array. This process is enhanced by an AI-powered special processing circuit integrated within the sensor—an industry first. Sony highlights the sensor’s ability to deliver superior detail reproduction, including fine patterns and text, along with high-speed processing capable of capturing 4K video at 30fps with up to 4x zoom.

Advanced imaging technologies such as DCG-HDR and Fine 12-bit ADC improve dynamic range and tonal accuracy across the full zoom range. Fine 12-bit ADC enhances quantization depth from the traditional 10 bits to 12 bits. Hybrid Frame HDR (HF-HDR) delivers over 100dB of dynamic range in QQBC mode, effectively minimizing highlight blowouts and blackouts for images that closely mimic natural human vision.

The Lytia 901 supports impressive video and burst photography capabilities, including 8K video at 30fps, 4K at 120fps, 60fps burst shooting at 12.5MP, 30fps at 50MP, and 10fps at full 200MP resolution. Industry rumors indicate that Oppo will use the sensor in its Find X9 Ultra, while vivo plans to incorporate it in the X300 Ultra. Sony has already begun shipping the Lytia 901 to device manufacturers this month.
