BMW’s latest iX3, built on the innovative Neue Klasse platform, addresses one of the biggest concerns for electric vehicle drivers: long-distance travel. This new battery electric SUV not only offers an extended driving range but also delivers charging speeds that outpace many competitors.
The key to its rapid charging capability is the advanced 800V electrical system. BMW claims the iX3 supports an impressive maximum of 400 kW DC fast charging. This high power input is enabled by the car’s sixth-generation battery technology, featuring new cylindrical cells that store more energy and charge faster than traditional prismatic cells. Under optimal conditions, BMW estimates the iX3 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes.

While manufacturer figures often look best on paper, a recent real-world test in Spain demonstrated the iX3’s impressive charging performance. Journalists tested the iX3 50 xDrive at an Ionity charging station delivering up to 350 kW.
With the navigation system preconditioning the battery for charging, the iX3 was plugged in at 45% state of charge (SoC) and immediately reached a peak charge rate of 321 kW. This is notably fast for a battery nearly half full. Even as the battery filled, when charging speed usually tapers off, the vehicle added 21 kWh within five minutes, averaging approximately 250 kW over that duration.
The iX3 50 xDrive features a substantial 108.7 kWh battery pack, providing an excellent range that alleviates range anxiety. Official WLTP testing rates the SUV’s range at up to 805 km on a full charge, while conservative real-world estimates exceed 600 km, making it ideal for cross-country journeys.
Performance is equally impressive with an all-wheel-drive xDrive system powered by dual motors delivering a combined 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. This enables the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km/h.

Besides its advanced electrical features, the iX3 serves as a practical family SUV. Measuring 4.78 meters in length, 1.89 meters in width, and 1.63 meters in height, it offers a generous 2.89-meter wheelbase for spacious interiors. Luggage capacity stands at 520 liters behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,750 liters when seats are folded. Additionally, a small front trunk provides an extra 58 liters of storage space.
This blend of cutting-edge charging technology, impressive driving range, and versatile design positions the new iX3 as a leading contender in the premium electric SUV segment. With a starting price around €68,000 in Europe, BMW demonstrates that the trade-off between performance and range is increasingly a thing of the past.
