Introduction
Waze has addressed one of the most frustrating limitations experienced by Android Auto users. Previously, when running Waze through Android Auto, drivers were unable to interact with the app on their phones simultaneously. With the latest update rolling out to all users, that restriction has finally been lifted, making the app more versatile and user-friendly for drivers.
Access the Phone Screen While Using Waze on Android Auto
A recent update enables users to open and navigate within the Waze app on their mobile devices even as it continues to display directions on their car’s Android Auto interface. Although the feature was available in beta for several months, it’s now part of the stable release for all users.
Catching Up to Google Maps
Users running Waze on Android Auto are now seeing banners informing them of this new functionality, marking a long-awaited improvement.
This move puts Waze on par with Google Maps, which resolved the same "locked screen" limitation back in 2023. Prior to that change, neither app allowed simultaneous phone use while navigating via Android Auto, a restriction that frustrated many drivers.

Better Late Than Never
This update significantly improves Waze’s usability by removing previous limitations, making the app feel more modern and less restrictive. For many users, this quality-of-life enhancement may be the deciding factor to continue using Waze daily. If the feature isn't visible yet, try force-stopping the Waze app and reopening it while connected to Android Auto to trigger the new function.
