Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch its first foldable iPhone, expected to debut with a notably higher price than existing foldable smartphones. While devices like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 are already positioned as premium gadgets, Apple's entry into this segment could raise the cost bar even further.

Industry insiders expect the foldable iPhone to breathe new life into a smartphone market facing declining sales, with global shipments predicted to drop by 4% to 1.2 billion units. Forecasts suggest the foldable model could sell 5.4 million units in 2026 alone, reaching 15.4 million over its lifecycle, according to UDN. In addressing a persistent issue faced by many foldables, Apple has reportedly solved the crease problem that has affected even the leading foldable phones set for release in 2025. Supply chain sources reveal that Apple’s foldable will be the “first truly crease-free foldable phone on the market,” which is expected to be a major selling point.

The foldable phone’s inner display will be supplied by Samsung, but Apple has taken charge of its panel structure, material processing, and lamination techniques. The hinge design is a collaborative effort with suppliers Shin Zu Shing and Amphenol, engineered to prevent crease formation when the display and hinge unite. Reports suggest the foldable iPhone is already in the pre-mass production stage.

Apple’s Commitment Yields Premium Pricing

Apple has reportedly held back on launching a foldable iPhone until it could deliver a crease-free, ultra-thin design. Assuming accuracy of recent reports, this breakthrough has enabled the company to price the device at a lofty $2,399, significantly higher than its closest competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, which starts at $1,999.99.

Exclusively a Pro-Level Device

The foldable iPhone is expected to debut exclusively alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models, with rumors suggesting Apple will adopt a staggered release schedule where standard models arrive in early 2027. Pricing the foldable iPhone near Pro-tier devices could soften concerns about its steep cost, as standard iPhones start at $799. However, the foldable model might lack some flagship features Apple fans are used to, such as Face ID and a triple rear camera setup.
