Last week, OpenAI introduced a new group chat feature for ChatGPT users in selected countries, and following positive feedback, the company is now rolling it out globally. Initially available on web and mobile platforms for users in Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, and South Korea across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, the group chat functionality allows collaborative interactions among up to 20 participants. OpenAI’s latest update leverages ChatGPT 5.1 Auto to deliver optimized responses based on each chat prompt and user model availability.
In an official blog update, OpenAI stated, "Early feedback from the pilot has been overwhelmingly positive, prompting us to expand group chats to all logged-in users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans worldwide in the coming days. We will continue to enhance the experience as usage grows."
The group chat feature enables users to engage in conversations with up to 20 participants simultaneously. Notably, ChatGPT’s responses within these group chats utilize ChatGPT 5.1 Auto, which intelligently selects the most suitable model to handle the inquiry, depending on the prompt and the models available to the participants involved. Importantly, rate limits imposed by OpenAI apply only when ChatGPT generates replies, not during the users’ exchanges within the group.
