Following a longer-than-usual beta phase, Nothing has officially started releasing the much-anticipated Nothing OS 4.0 update, built on Android 16, to users of the Nothing Phone (3).

As expected, the rollout is initially limited to the Nothing Phone (3). While the company has assured that other Nothing and CMF devices will eventually receive the update, no exact timeline for these releases has been provided yet.

This update enriches the experience on the Nothing Phone (3) by introducing enhanced Flip to Glyph controls, a polished Pocket Mode, and new Glyph Toys including Hourglass and Lunar Cycle. Additionally, the Mirror Selfie function now allows saving the original photo as an extra image in the Gallery for greater flexibility.

Beyond the model-specific features, Nothing OS 4.0 delivers a host of system-wide improvements that will eventually reach other compatible devices. These enhancements include:

  • Live Updates: Real-time information for rides, deliveries, and timers now appears directly on your lock screen and Glyph Interface, merging visual and light-based alerts for instant progress tracking without opening apps.
  • Expanded Glyph Progress Support: Any app compatible with Android 16’s Live Updates can now utilize Nothing’s Glyph Progress feature, significantly broadening app support.
  • Refined Extra Dark Mode: Deeper blacks, enhanced contrast, and reduced power consumption improve the overall visual experience across the system.
  • Simplified UI: Notifications, Quick Settings, and the App Drawer sport a calmer, more focused design optimized for low-light use, with plans for this redesign to extend to Essential Space and Launcher apps.
  • Smoother Motion: Improved touch, swipe, and gesture interactions offer greater responsiveness and tactile feedback.
  • Haptic Feedback: Subtle vibrations now give physical cues when volume reaches its maximum or minimum.
  • Enhanced Animations: Smoother app open/close transitions featuring gently scaling home screen backgrounds add depth and fluidity.
  • Improved Notification Interaction: Notifications benefit from weight and rebound effects that create a natural, responsive feel.
  • New Widget Sizes: Small 1×1 and 2×1 widgets for Weather, Pedometer, and Screen Time allow for a more personalized and minimal home screen layout.
  • Pop-up View: Users can open and switch between two floating apps simultaneously, with intuitive gestures for minimizing and expanding.
  • Hidden Icons: Hide apps from the App Drawer to keep your home screen clean without losing quick access via a swipe.

The update process will roll out in stages. If your Nothing Phone (3) has not yet prompted for the update, rest assured it’s on the way. Simply wait a few days for the notification to arrive.
