Google is reportedly developing an innovative feature for its Phone by Google app, designed to help users communicate the urgency and purpose of their calls more effectively. Named "Expressive Calling" and internally codenamed "expresso," this feature could provide callers with the option to share the reason behind their call, potentially increasing the chances of getting a timely response.
Introducing "Expressive Calling": Communicate Your Call's Purpose
Discovered in the beta version 201 of the Phone by Google app available on the Google Play Store, "Expressive Calling" will enable users to inform the recipients why they are reaching out. The feature allows you to select from preset reasons for your call, such as:
- Catch up
- News to share
- Quick question
- It's urgent!
If you select the "It's urgent!" option, the recipient will hear a distinctive alert sound, and the call notification will override the recipient’s "Do Not Disturb" mode. Additionally, if the urgent call goes unanswered, the recipient will receive a notification indicating a "Missed Urgent Call," helping them recognize the call's importance even after it ends.
To enable this feature, users must grant SMS permission to the Phone by Google app, allowing it to send notifications linked to the calls.
Exclusivity to Pixel Devices
While Google has yet to officially announce "Expressive Calling," indications suggest it will be exclusive to Pixel smartphones. This exclusivity aligns with Google's strategy of offering unique features that enhance the Pixel user experience.
For those who frequently make urgent or important calls, this feature could be a valuable addition—helping to convey the importance of the call in a non-intrusive way and improving the odds of connecting with the intended party promptly.
Overall, "Expressive Calling" has the potential to enhance phone communication by adding meaningful context to every call. Pixel users may look forward to this thoughtfully designed feature if Google decides to officially roll it out.
User Feedback
In a recent poll, 79.44% of respondents expressed interest in using a feature that allows callers to explain the reason for their call, while 20.56% felt it was unnecessary. With 180 votes cast, the reception thus far suggests strong interest in such an update.
