With 15,000 jobs set to be cut and 200 stores closing, his role will be crucial in steering the company through this challenging transition.

Alfonso Villanueva’s Role in Verizon’s Transformation

Verizon is preparing for major changes to its structure, including a significant reduction in workforce. Villanueva will lead a newly formed Transformation Organization, overseeing long-term initiatives related to strategy, technology, and operational efficiency. This includes direct management of teams focusing on strategy, data and AI, and supply chain improvements.

Previously, Villanueva was a Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company, leading their Telecom, Media, and Technology practice across the Asia-Pacific region. He also served as Chief Innovation Officer at SingTel, where he helped launch its digital division and venture fund. His extensive experience in telecommunications and innovation makes him a fitting choice to drive Verizon’s strategic overhaul.

Restructuring and Its Impact

Verizon’s leadership, including new CEO Daniel Schulman, has acknowledged the need to move away from relying on constant price hikes to generate revenue. With declining customer numbers and increased competition, the company aims to improve efficiency and innovation instead of passing costs onto consumers.

The job cuts and store closures are expected to begin imminently as part of a broader effort to sharpen Verizon’s digital infrastructure and operational capabilities.
