X Debuts “Chat” App Featuring End-to-End Encrypted Messaging and Enhanced Privacy

Source: Date:

In a move to strengthen user privacy, X (formerly known as Twitter) has launched a standalone chat application named Chat, focusing on secure communication with robust end-to-end encryption.

Building on its previous introduction of encrypted direct messages in mid-2023, X's new Chat app offers a comprehensive messaging experience. It promises features such as encrypted chats and file sharing, disappearing messages, screenshot blocking, and the ability to edit or delete sent messages. The company emphasizes its commitment to privacy by declaring, “No ads. No tracking. Total privacy.”

The Chat app supports both voice and video calls, enhancing its capabilities beyond simple text messaging. A voice memo feature that enables users to send pre-recorded voice notes is also in development and expected to arrive soon.

While the app provides end-to-end encryption (E2EE), X acknowledges that current protections have limitations. According to the About Encrypted Direct Messages help page, the app does not yet defend against man-in-the-middle attacks. This means that if an attacker, either a malicious insider or under a lawful order, compromises an encrypted conversation, the involved users will remain unaware of the breach.

To address this vulnerability, X is actively working on new protective mechanisms designed to make man-in-the-middle attacks extremely difficult, if not impossible. The company aims to introduce alerts for both senders and recipients in case such attacks occur.
