Google Messages to Introduce Long-Awaited @Mentions Feature for Group Chats

Source: Date:

Google Messages is testing a new feature that many users have eagerly anticipated: the ability to tag participants in group chats using @mentions. This functionality, familiar to users of other messaging platforms, is designed to ensure that important messages capture the attention of specific recipients, even if their notifications are muted.

When composing a group message, typing the "@" symbol will bring up a list of contacts involved in the conversation. Selecting a contact will tag them in the message, notifying them directly. Notably, the tagged person's name can be customized or shortened so others do not see their full name. This new feature is currently limited to RCS (Rich Communication Services) group chats within Google Messages.

The feature appears to be in the beta phase, with only a handful of users in Google Messages' beta testing program having access at this time. One beta tester on Samsung’s open beta version 20251103 rc00 confirmed seeing the feature, though it remains unavailable on some devices, such as the Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3.3. The rollout is identified with the Google Messages version 20251103_00_RC00.

The introduction of @mentions aligns Google Messages with other popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram, which have long supported tagging features. The primary purpose of this addition is to help important messages stand out and ensure they are noticed by the intended recipient within busy group chats.

For Android users eager to access this functionality, make sure you are using the latest Google Messages app available on the Google Play Store. If the feature does not appear yet, joining the beta program or waiting for a stable release update may be necessary.

When tagged, a notification will appear to the recipient, and the chat will display a visual @ symbol, signaling the mention. This enhancement promises to improve communication clarity and responsiveness in group conversations on Android devices.
