Google Introduces Battery-Saving Feature for Pixel Always-on Display

Source: Date:

Google is rolling out a new feature for Pixel users that allows them to save battery life by controlling the Always-on display (AOD) settings.

This new feature, discovered in the Android Canary build, includes a redesigned slider for the Pixel flashlight and an option to turn off the AOD when no user activity is detected. This move is aimed at enhancing user control over the Pixel's battery usage.

While users could previously manually disable the AOD display in the settings, this new feature will automatically power down the display when the phone is not in use, potentially improving battery life.

It remains to be seen how Google defines "inactive state" for the Pixel, but the feature could take cues from Samsung's AOD settings that turn off the display when the device is in a pocket or when the user is asleep.

As Google is known for backporting features to older Pixel models, it is possible that this battery-saving AOD feature will also be made available to previous Pixel devices in the future.
