Sony Xperia 1 phones previously offered a free wired external monitor feature, allowing users to connect to Sony Alpha cameras. However, with the latest update of the Monitor & Control app, this functionality is now behind a paywall. Users will need to pay a monthly subscription of $5 or an annual fee of $50 to access this feature. While wireless connection is still available for free, it introduces additional lag, making it unsuitable for professional use.
It is advised not to update to version 2.4.0 of the app if you want to retain the free functionality. Additionally, the app has been tested to work with non-Sony devices such as Galaxies, Pixels, Xiaomis, Oppos, vivos, iPhones, and iPads. However, the high-resolution monitoring feature exclusive to Sony phones remains a part of the subscription-based model.
