Peter Adderton Expresses Concerns Over the Future of Boost Mobile

Source: Date:

Peter Adderton, the founder of Boost Mobile, has raised concerns about the impact of AT&T's recent $23 billion deal to acquire EchoStar's spectrum on the future of Boost Mobile. The deal effectively ends the idea of a fourth nationwide carrier and leaves only AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile as the national operators. Adderton believes that with only three carriers left, MVNOs like Boost Mobile could struggle due to a lack of bargaining power and potential squeezing out over time. He also calls for fixed broadband providers like Comcast and Charter to be required to wholesale access to their networks to preserve competition. The acquisition of TracFone by Verizon and the purchases of Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile by T-Mobile have further tightened carrier control over independent brands, leaving only a few players like Consumer Cellular with a significant subscriber base.
