UK's Extensive Demands for Access to iPhones Revealed

Source: Date:

Recent court filings have shed light on the UK government's efforts to gain access to iPhone user data, revealing a broader push than previously thought. The Home Office's request not only targeted Apple's Advanced Data Protection encryption but also included access to the company's standard iCloud service, used by millions of customers worldwide.

While US officials had indicated that the UK had dropped its efforts to access encrypted data of American users, the court filing suggests that the UK's demands extended to Apple's regular iCloud service, potentially compromising the privacy of users globally.

Apple had first mentioned the UK order in February when it removed ADP encryption for UK users, but the filing indicates that the Home Office sought access to iCloud for messages, passwords, and backups from users beyond the UK.
